Brentwood Half Marathon

We had over 70 runners (our best ever number) in the Brentwood half marathon.  This is an extremely popular race which is booked up before Christmas.

It was lovely to see so many people supporting the Hospice and running for us, my voice was sore the next day with cheering.

A BIG Thank You to you all.

As we continue to run our MATCH initiative with Barry Hearn to encourage teams of young people to build their business skills and to raise money for the Hospice, I was interviewed by a young team of boys from Eastbury Comprehensive School.  They were preparing for a presentation they were doing about the Hospice and if they won, then the prize money would come to the Hospice.  Good luck boys.

Hospice Buildings

We have continued to work hard to make sure our buildings are ‘fit for purpose’.  Building work is continuing on the Inpatient unit roof, and we have just had completed a full ‘condition survey’ which we are currently analysing  to ensure we have a programme of maintenance and development for the buildings.  Thank you to everyone who has supported and continues to support the appeal.  We have raised over £140,000 which is incredible.

Commissioning Changes

There has been much discussion with the Clinical Commissioning group for Basildon and Brentwood regarding end of life care and the work of the Hospice.  The Hospice provides our full range of services to the people of Brentwood where referrals to all our services continue to rise. The Commissioners have launched a survey about end of life care which will be used in the review of services.  The Hospice will also be talking to GPs and getting feedback from the public on all our services and in particular our new Community services as its very important that we provide services that are needed and we aim to be the ‘Hospice of Choice” for people.

One in a Million

I am delighted to tell you about a very special book that has just come out on Amazon called ‘one in a million’ by Jacqui Atkinson.  Jacqui has a very severe form of stiff mans syndrome and the proceeds from this book go to St Oswalds  Hospice in Newcastle who have supported Jacqui so well and to the Stiff Mans association.

My Cousin Jacqui -One in a Million

My Cousin Jacqui -One in a Million

This book is a must to see the journey of this dreadful disease through the eyes of a patient and her struggle through the health system.  I couldn’t put the book down because it is so moving and gives such great insight, and because Jacqui is my cousin, a remarkable woman with such courage and humour.

The book will be in the Saint Francis Hospice library.

Roof Appeal

I have been overwhelmed by the response to our roof appeal following damage to a number of areas of our building and specifically the roof where our in patient unit is and complimentary services.
Our supporters have responded to our crisis fantastically with funding or offers of help and advice. Thank you so very very much.
Following further building inspections and a visit by the loss adjuster we are beginning work again now as we want our beds open ASAP.  We have fortunately got our new community services in place and they are responding brilliantly so that we have minimised the number of patients waiting for a bed.

New World Class Saint Francis Hospice in the Community launched

I am delighted and proud that we have launched our new remodelled ‘hospice in the community services’. These services build on our well established 24/7-365 days a year community services, but we have worked hard with no additional investment to make sure our services are available with 2 hours for those in crisis.

We have a new contact centre staffed with highly skilled nurses who will respond quickly, with care and compassion and support patients and families during very difficult times.

Working around the clock and being able to help with pain relief and managing complex symptoms is some  of the many services we provide, services established 30 years ago and funded by local people for local people.

Richard Madeley our Patron’s Visit

We were delighted Richard could visit us again, to do a radio interview and meet staff and patients in the in patient unit, day therapy and fundraising.

The Bad Weather

The terrible rain has taken its toll on our Hospice building resulting in us have to close some beds , complementary therapy, chapel and have a number of ‘buckets’ around the building.  We have launched an appeal to help fund the necessary repair work.  We have now completed the chapel roof and are currently working on other roof areas.

When will it stop raining?
